Truffle Cultivation is Green Agriculture

By Mary Vincent - Follow on Twitter @MaryVincent
Per Robert Chang
, Managing Director American Truffle Company, on average 1 acre of truffle orchard can offset carbon of 10 households of 4. Low input of fertilizers and pesticides are also important.
Here is an article on last week's Napa Truffle Festival along with a description of the Science of Truffle Cultivation.

Storing carbon dioxide underground could trigger earthquakes, says Stanford geophysicist Mark Zoback

Stanford geophysicist Mark Zoback spoke Dec. 13 at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco's Moscone Center West. His talk was a be part of the session Land-Ocean-Atmospheric Processes: Implication to Natural Hazards and the Global Carbon Cycle I.

An attempt to slow global warming by pumping carbon dioxide underground – a proposal known as carbon sequestration – is likely to trigger earthquakes, according to Stanford geophysicist Mark Zoback.

While such earthquakes are unlikely to be big enough to injure people or damage property, they could still cause serious problems for the reservoirs containing the gas, as well as arouse public concern.

Many of the sites being considered for sequestration in the United States are in the interior of the country, far from major faults such as the San Andreas. But Zoback says these interior areas still have an abundance of faults, many poised in "a state of failure equilibrium." When carbon dioxide is pumped into a reservoir for sequestration, the fluid pressure in the reservoir will increase and some of those faults will fail, he said.

The damage would occur underground. Even an earthquake of modest size could potentially breach the seal of a reservoir, allowing carbon dioxide to permeate back to the surface. Although it is highly unlikely that the gas would pose a danger to people or livestock, it would render the reservoir useless.

"I am not against carbon dioxide sequestration by any means and it certainly has a role," Zoback said. "What I am asking people to consider is whether or not it should really be one of the key components of a strategy for reduction of greenhouse gas."

Ofcom wants numbers to be easier to use

Ofcom the Super Regulator is holding a consultation on non-geiographic numbers and making them easier to understand and fixing the several issues that exist i.e. 0800 numbers not being free from mobiles (companies should also publish 03 numbers which are always local and can be included in call bundles).

The full ranges in question are 03, 05, 070/076, 080, 0845, 0870, 083/4, 0871, 09, 116 and 118.

Ofcom wants charges made clearer and so premium rate numbers would have to state something like "this call will cost £1.50 per minute plus your network operator's charges".

More information is available from the Ofcom site. The consultation closes on 10th March 2011 and stakeholders may respond on-line.

Ofcom reservers 2.6GHz for wireless cameras during Olympics

Ofcom the Super Regulator has published a statement on the 2.6GHz (2600MHz) band which is being reserved for use by wireless cameras during the London Olympic Games.

The 2.6GHz band has been contentious as Ofcom initially wanted to auction it in 2007 but were blocked by the mobile operators. The auction has now slipped until late 2012 at the earliest, especially now since the Olympics are taking place from 27 July until 9 September 2012.

There has been some worry about interference to Civil Aviation Authority radars that operate in 2.7GHz from wireless mobile camera, but Ofcom deemed that they only transmit at low power so interference issues are minimal.

Video: Climate Change & Bill Clinton's Speech at Dreamforce San Francisco, December 2010

You must watch this Bill Clinton Video from Salesforce's Dreamforce Conference in San Francisco December 8, 2010.

Stevie Wonder introduced Bill Clinton, and Bill Clinton covered a wide variety of topics from WikiLeaks to Education to Climate Change. Here are his thoughts on Climate Change, and I highly recommend you view the full video of his speech below.

Bill Clinton:
"..It's an unsustainable world because of the way we produce and consume energy. As far as I know, in the last election, we elected an enormous number of people who don't believe in climate change. They just say that in spite of the evidence, it's just not a problem. But thankfully, we appear to be the only country on Earth willing to give a congressional majority to people who deny it, so most people still think it's a problem.
However, the bigger problem is that even people who accept the reality that the climate is warming at an unsustainable rate, which will be fun for a while when you're going to be able to cross the North Pole by ship in the Summertime, will not be fun if all the ice melts on Greenland which has 8 percent of the World's fresh water and flows into the North Atlantic if it interrupts the Gulf Stream. Then you'll have Northern Europe including some of the World's most productive economies as cold in the Winter as they were in the Ice Age years ago, and therefore, they'll find it difficult to sustain what they're doing. Otherwise, most of the countries hardest hit by Climate Change save Australia which is already dealing with it will be poor countries including Afghanistan and Haiti and sub-saharan Africa. We have to find an economically viable way to deal with this."

You can view the full video here (a better quality video I took with another camera includes Stevie Wonder's 'Opening Act', and will be uploaded here asap so check back soon):

Canon's EF lenses can suit everybody

Canon have a wide range of lenses available that can be used to suit every occasion and situation. All the EF lenses will fit every model of Canon EOS cameras and Canon have produced a video to show what's available.

Canon probably produce the widest range of lenses from multipurpose cost-effective ones through extremely expensive dedicated lenses that professional photographers use.
